Getting More Leads

The Difference Between a Lead and a Job: Converting Enquiries

Getting enquiries is only half the battle. Here is how Irish tradespeople can convert more of their leads into actual paid work.

A lot of tradespeople focus entirely on getting more leads. More calls, more form submissions, more enquiries. But the number of leads you get is only half of the equation. The other half is how many of them you convert into actual jobs.

Even a modest improvement in your conversion rate can have a bigger impact on your revenue than doubling your lead volume.

Why Leads Do Not Automatically Become Jobs

A customer who contacts you has shown interest. They have not made a decision. Between that first contact and actually hiring you, several things can go wrong.

They might not hear back from you quickly enough and hire someone who responded faster. Your quote might arrive days after a competitor’s. The voicemail they left might not get a same-day callback. The form submission confirmation email might land in their spam folder.

Or the problem might be on the quote itself. A price with no explanation of what is included. No indication of timeline. No sense of who you are and why they should choose you over someone cheaper.

Or it might be in the follow-up. You quoted, they went quiet, and you assumed they were not interested rather than following up once.

All of these are fixable.

Respond Fast

This is the biggest single lever. The faster you respond to an enquiry, the higher your conversion rate. That is consistent across every type of service business.

When a homeowner contacts three tradespeople and one calls back within the hour while the other two take two days, the fast responder has a massive advantage. Even if they are slightly more expensive, the responsiveness signals professionalism.

If you cannot always answer the phone on the tools, set up a professional voicemail and commit to same-day callbacks. Send a quick text acknowledgement when you miss a call: “Hi, saw your missed call. I will ring back this evening. What is the job about?”

Make Your Quote Easy to Say Yes To

A quote that just states a price and nothing else is a missed opportunity. A strong quote includes:

  • A clear description of exactly what work is included
  • A timeline for when you can start and how long it will take
  • Your relevant experience or qualifications for this type of job
  • Your contact details and a prompt to get in touch with any questions

A customer who receives a quote like this knows exactly what they are getting, when they are getting it, and that they are dealing with someone professional. That makes the decision easier and reduces the chance they shop around further.

Follow Up on Quotes

Most tradespeople send a quote and then wait. If the customer does not respond, they assume they lost it to someone cheaper and move on.

Often the customer is just busy. They meant to respond. They forgot. A single polite follow-up three to five days after sending a quote wins a meaningful percentage of jobs that would otherwise have been lost to inaction.

“Hi, just checking you received the quote I sent over. Happy to answer any questions or talk through the details if that would help.”

Short. No pressure. Gives them an easy way to re-engage.

Handle Objections Rather Than Dropping Your Price

When a customer says your price is higher than another quote, the instinct is to discount. But often the better move is to explain the difference.

“I am a bit higher than some because I use X type of materials and all my work is fully guaranteed. A cheaper quote might cut corners in areas that will cost you more in the long run.”

Some customers will still go with the cheaper option. But some will value the explanation and hire you at your original price. You will never know if you just drop immediately.

Make It Easy to Say Yes

Remove any friction in the final step. If a customer has to jump through hoops to accept a quote, pay a deposit, or confirm a booking, some of them will not bother.

A simple “Just reply to this message to confirm and I will get you booked in” is all it takes. The easier you make the next step, the more people will take it.
