Northern Ireland is a unique market for tradespeople. You are in the UK. You use the pound. But you are close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. Many of your customers are on both sides of that border.

Getting local SEO right in Northern Ireland means understanding this unique position.

The Northern Ireland Market for Tradespeople

Northern Ireland has a mix of urban centers and rural areas. Belfast is the largest market. Armagh, Newry, Lisburn, and Derry are significant too. But there are also rural areas where tradespeople serve small towns and surrounding countryside.

Many Northern Irish tradespeople have customers on both sides of the border. A plumber in Newry might serve Newry and surrounding areas in NI, but also Dundalk, Droichead Átha, and other Irish towns just south of the border.

This creates a question: should you target both sides of the border?

The Two Markets Question

If you serve customers on both sides of the border, you face a choice.

Option 1: Run two separate businesses. A NI business on your UK website with pricing in pounds. An Irish business on a separate Irish website with pricing in euros.

Option 2: Run one business that serves both sides of the border, using your UK website with pricing in pounds, and notes that you serve Irish customers.

Option 1 is more complex but cleaner. You have separate Google profiles for each market. Separate websites optimized for each region.

Option 2 is simpler but less optimized. One website, one profile, but you are not fully optimized for either market.

For most NI tradespeople, Option 2 is more realistic. You are based in NI, your primary business is in NI, you occasionally pick up work across the border.

Make this choice consciously. Do not pretend to be operating in both markets equally if you are not.

Google Business Profile Setup for NI Tradespeople

Use a UK address for your Google Business Profile. Your physical address in Northern Ireland.

Google will recognize you as UK-based because your address is in the UK. This is correct.

Your service areas should clearly define where you work. Belfast. Armagh. Newry. Lisburn. Specific postcodes if relevant.

Do not claim to serve all of Ireland or all of Northern Ireland if you do not. Be specific about your actual service area.

If you do serve some areas on the Irish side of the border, you can include them in your service area description. “We serve Newry and surrounding areas including Dundalk” tells Google and your customers what you actually do.

Keywords for Northern Ireland Tradespeople

Your keywords must be location-specific and market-specific.

“Plumber Belfast” is a good keyword. So is “Emergency plumber Armagh” or “Boiler repair Newry”.

Search these terms on Google. See who ranks. See what the search volume is.

If your business is in Newry and you serve the border region, you might target keywords like “Plumber Newry”, “Plumber Armagh”, and possibly “Plumber Dundalk” if you serve that area.

Do not try to rank for all of Ireland or all of Northern Ireland. You cannot. Target your specific towns.

Website for Northern Ireland Tradespeople

Your website should be based in the UK (use a UK address, UK phone number in the header, UK pricing in pounds).

Include your town or city prominently. Your homepage should say “Belfast Plumber” or “Newry Electrician”. Not “Northern Ireland Plumber”.

Create specific pages for each significant town you serve. A page for Belfast, a page for Armagh, a page for Newry.

If you serve areas on the Irish side of the border, you can create pages for those too. “We also serve Dundalk and surrounding areas.” This is honest and does not confuse your primary market.

Use pounds for all pricing. This is UK currency and that is where you are.

Gas Safe Registration

Northern Ireland uses the UK Gas Safe Register. You do not register with RGI. You use Gas Safe.

If you are a gas engineer, put “Gas Safe Registered” prominently on your website and your Google profile.

This is a crucial trust signal for NI customers. It tells them you are properly qualified and regulated.

NIC EIC for Electricians

If you are an electrician, use NIC EIC (the UK equivalent of NICEIC) for your qualifications.

Northern Ireland does not have RGI or NICEIC. It has NIC EIC and similar UK-standard qualifications.

Put your NIC EIC registration on your website. This is a trust signal for customers and a ranking signal for Google.

Border Proximity Advantage

Your proximity to the border is actually an advantage, not a problem.

You have access to markets on both sides. You have unique cultural understanding. You can speak both English and Irish if relevant.

Market this. “We serve Northern Ireland and cross-border areas. Experienced with both UK and Irish building standards.”

This sets you apart from competitors who only serve one side.

Practical Considerations for Border Tradespeople

Be clear about where you work. If a customer is calling from Dundalk, are you willing to travel? How far? What is your call-out charge?

Use two currencies if you serve both sides significantly. “£150 call-out charge (Northern Ireland), €150 call-out charge (Republic of Ireland)”. This is clear and professional.

Be aware of building regulations differences. UK Building Regulations differ from Irish Building Regulations in some areas. Know which apply to which jobs.

Keep your Google profile and your website address in Northern Ireland. This is your base. But acknowledge you serve surrounding areas.
