WhatsApp is already the communication tool most Irish tradespeople use every day. But most use it only for existing customers and personal contacts. Used properly, it can be one of the most effective tools you have for responding to leads and closing jobs.
Why WhatsApp Works So Well for Tradespeople
Text messages get read. The open rate on a WhatsApp message is significantly higher than email. When a potential customer sends you an enquiry and you respond by WhatsApp, they almost certainly see your message.
It is also immediate and informal in a way that email is not. A short, conversational WhatsApp message feels more personal than a formal email. That suits the trade-to-homeowner relationship well.
Setting Up WhatsApp Business
If you are using WhatsApp for business, switch to WhatsApp Business. It is free and has a few features that make a meaningful difference.
Business profile. You can add your business name, your trade, your address, your website, and your email. When someone messages you, they see a professional profile rather than just a phone number.
Quick replies. You can set up pre-written replies to common messages and send them with a couple of taps. Useful for things like your standard response to a new enquiry or your availability message.
Away message. Set up an automatic message that goes out when you receive a message outside working hours. “Thanks for getting in touch. I will get back to you by [time].” This acknowledges their message immediately even when you cannot respond personally.
Labels. You can label conversations so you can quickly find all your new enquiries, active quotes, or completed jobs.
Responding to New Enquiries via WhatsApp
When a potential customer contacts you, speed matters. A quick WhatsApp response while you are on the tools beats a carefully worded email sent that evening.
Keep the first response short and warm: “Hi [name], thanks for getting in touch. I can come out for a look at that. When would suit you?”
That is all you need to say initially. You are acknowledging them quickly, confirming you are interested, and moving toward a next step. Everything else can be sorted on the phone or in person.
Sending Quotes via WhatsApp
For smaller jobs, sending a quote by WhatsApp is perfectly acceptable and often more effective than email because it is more likely to be read immediately.
Keep it clear and structured even in a WhatsApp message:
“Hi [name], here is the quote for the exterior painting: Work included: [list] Materials: [included/not included] Timeline: [start date, duration] Price: [amount]
Let me know if you have any questions.”
For larger jobs, a more formal written quote is appropriate, but even then a WhatsApp follow-up to say “sent you the quote by email, let me know if you have any questions” ensures they see it.
Following Up on Quotes
WhatsApp makes follow-up easy and low pressure. A quick message three to five days after sending a quote: “Hi [name], just checking you got the quote okay. Happy to chat through anything if it would help.”
Short, friendly, not pushy. This wins a meaningful number of jobs that would otherwise have been lost to inaction.
Asking for Reviews via WhatsApp
The easiest way to get Google reviews is by WhatsApp. When a job is done and the customer is happy, send them a message with your review link directly.
“Hi [name], great working with you. If you get a chance to leave us a Google review it really helps us out. Here is the link: [link]”
One tap takes them straight to the review form. The ease of it dramatically improves the response rate compared to asking verbally and leaving people to find the link themselves.
A Simple Habit That Wins More Work
Save a few template messages in your WhatsApp Business quick replies. A first response to new enquiries. A quote follow-up. A review request. A seasonal availability message.
Having these ready to send with two taps means you can respond to enquiries immediately from the tools, follow up on quotes without it slipping your mind, and ask for reviews consistently after every job.
These small habits, compounded over months, generate significantly more work and reviews than doing everything ad hoc.
