How to Rank in the Map Pack for Your Trade in Your Town

The map pack is the most valuable spot in local Google search. Here is how Irish tradespeople can get into it and stay there.

When someone searches for a tradesperson on Google, the first thing they see (after any ads) is a map with three businesses listed below it. This is called the map pack, or the local pack. It appears before any regular website results.

The three businesses in that map pack get the majority of clicks. If you are not in it, you are invisible to a huge chunk of potential customers.

Here is how to get in.

What Is the Map Pack?

The map pack shows three local businesses that Google considers the most relevant, trusted, and nearby for a given search. Searches that trigger the map pack include things like:

  • Painter near me
  • “Roofer Dundalk”
  • “Plumber Drogheda”
  • “Garden maintenance Louth”

The businesses that appear are not paying to be there. They earned their position through their Google Business Profile, their reviews, and their overall online presence.

Why It Matters So Much

Studies show that around 44 percent of people click on a map pack result when one appears. That is before they scroll to any website results.

For a tradesperson targeting local customers, getting into the map pack can transform the volume of enquiries you receive. It puts you in front of people who are ready to hire, not just browsing.

What Determines Who Gets In

Google selects map pack results based on the same three factors as all local search: relevance, distance, and prominence. For the map pack specifically, your Google Business Profile carries more weight than anything else.

Here is what matters most:

A complete and active Google Business Profile. This is the single biggest factor. A profile that is fully filled in, has plenty of photos, lists all services, has a proper business description, and is regularly updated will outperform one that is half-finished.

Google reviews. Volume and recency both matter. A business with 50 reviews collected consistently over 12 months will rank higher than one with 50 reviews all left in the same week. Keep the flow of new reviews coming in.

Proximity to the searcher. You cannot control where the customer is searching from, but you can make sure your service area is accurately set on your profile so Google knows which searches to show you for.

Consistency across the web. Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you appear on.

Your website. While the Google Business Profile carries more weight for map pack rankings, your website still matters. A fast, mobile-friendly site with clear content about your services and location reinforces your relevance signals.

Step by Step: How to Improve Your Map Pack Ranking

Step 1: Fully complete your Google Business Profile. Go through every field. Make sure your category is as specific as possible, your service area covers every location you work in, your hours are accurate, and your description clearly mentions your trade and areas.

Step 2: Add real photos. Add at least 10 photos now and keep adding new ones every couple of weeks. Before and after shots of finished jobs work well.

Step 3: List every service you offer. Use the services section to add every specific thing you do with a short description. The more detailed this is, the more searches you become relevant for.

Step 4: Get more reviews. Ask every happy customer for a Google review immediately after the job. Send them a direct link. Make it a routine. This is the fastest lever you have.

Step 5: Respond to every review. Activity on your profile signals to Google that it is maintained. Responding to reviews is one of the easiest ways to show that.

Step 6: Post regular updates. Use the posts feature on your Google Business Profile to share updates, finished projects, or useful tips once every two to three weeks. It keeps your profile active in Google’s eyes.

Step 7: Make sure your website matches. Your website should clearly state your business name, the services you offer, and the areas you cover. Consistency between your website and your Google Business Profile strengthens both.

How Long Will It Take?

For less competitive areas and trades, businesses that do all of the above start appearing in the map pack within two to four months. For more competitive searches in larger towns and cities, it can take six to twelve months of consistent effort.

The key word is consistent. The businesses that dominate the map pack are not doing anything magical. They are just doing the basics and doing them repeatedly.

What If You Are Already in the Map Pack?

Getting in is not enough. Staying there requires ongoing effort. Keep collecting reviews. Keep your profile updated. Keep adding photos of finished work. Competitors are working on displacing you, and Google’s local rankings shift regularly.

Treat your Google Business Profile as an ongoing business tool, not a one-time setup job.
