“Roofer near me” is one of the most searched phrases by people who need roofing work. Someone finds water coming through their ceiling, pulls out their phone, types “roofer near me,” and Google shows them three results. If you’re one of them, you get a phone call. If you’re not, you lose the lead.

This guide explains exactly how “near me” searches work and what you need to do to appear at the top.

How Google’s “Near Me” Search Works

When someone searches “roofer near me,” Google doesn’t show a traditional search results page. It shows a map with three business listings on the right side. These three spots are the most valuable real estate in local roofing. The roofer in the first spot gets called first. The second gets called if the first is busy. The third gets called if the first two don’t answer.

Google decides which three to show based on three ranking factors:

Proximity. How far are you from the person searching? If someone in Dublin searches “roofer near me,” Google prioritizes roofers in Dublin over roofers in Cork. This is automatic. You can’t control it directly, but you can control your service area.

Prominence. How well-known and trusted are you on Google? Prominence is determined by the number of reviews you have, how recent those reviews are, how well you maintain your Google Business Profile, and how many other websites link to you or mention your business.

Relevance. Does your business match what the person searched for? If they searched “roofer near me” and your profile says you’re a roofer, you match. If they searched “emergency roofer” and your profile says you offer emergency roofing, you match even better.

To rank for “roofer near me,” you need to optimize all three factors.

Optimize Proximity By Setting Your Service Area Correctly

Your service area tells Google where you operate. It’s one of the most important settings in your Google Business Profile.

Log into Google Business Profile and find the “Service area” field. Add every area you actually service. If you’re based in Limerick but you travel to Tipperary, Galway, and Clare for jobs, add all of them.

Be realistic. Don’t add areas you don’t actually service. Google can tell if you’re being dishonest, and it penalizes you for it.

If you travel across multiple counties for jobs, that’s fine. Add each county where you actually work. Your service area should match the area where you want to rank.

Google uses this information to show your profile to people searching in those areas. If someone in Tipperary searches “roofer near me” and Tipperary is in your service area, you’re eligible to rank for that search.

Build Prominence With Reviews

Prominence is the hardest factor to game. It’s the main thing Google uses to decide which roofer ranks first versus second versus third when multiple roofers are nearby.

The primary tool for building prominence is reviews. A roofer with 50 reviews ranks higher than a roofer with 10 reviews. A roofer with 10 five-star reviews ranks higher than a roofer with 10 reviews averaging 3 stars.

Here’s how to build reviews systematically:

After every roofing job, message the customer. Send them a text or email saying: “Hi John, thanks for hiring us for your roof repair. We’d be grateful for a quick Google review. Here’s the link: [link].”

Make the link clickable and direct. Use Google’s review link generator or just link directly to your Google Business Profile.

Ask about 80% of your customers. Not everyone will leave a review, but most will if you ask. If you complete four jobs a week and 80% leave reviews, that’s three reviews per week or 160 reviews per year.

Respond to every review. Say thank you for positive ones. For negative reviews, respond professionally and try to solve the problem. Google sees these responses and factors them into prominence rankings.

Keep your reviews current. A five-star review from last month is valuable. A five-star review from three years ago is less valuable. Stay active.

Optimize Relevance By Matching Search Intent

When someone searches “emergency roofer near me,” they’re not just looking for any roofer. They’re looking for someone who offers emergency roofing right now.

Make sure your Google Business Profile lists emergency roofing as a service if you offer it. Add “24/7 emergency callouts” to your profile description.

On your website, make sure your emergency roofing page is easy to find. If you rank for “emergency roofer near me,” but someone lands on your site and can’t find information about emergency roofing, they’ll leave.

Match search intent on your service pages too. If someone searches “flat roof specialist,” your profile should mention flat roof services, and your website should have a dedicated flat roof page.

The better your profile and website match what people are searching for, the higher you rank and the better your conversion rate is when they call.

The Hierarchy Of Ranking Factors

Not all three factors are equally important. Google’s algorithm weights them like this:

  1. Proximity (if you’re in their area, you’re in the game)
  2. Prominence (number and quality of reviews, profile activity, citations)
  3. Relevance (does your business match the search)

You can’t change proximity, but you can set your service area correctly so you’re in the running.

Prominence is what separates the roofer ranked first from the roofer ranked third. If two roofers are equally close to the person searching and both offer the same services, the one with more reviews ranks higher.

Relevance matters most when there’s a specific modifier. If someone searches “emergency roofer,” the emergency roofer ranks higher than the general roofer, all else equal. If someone searches “flat roof specialist,” the roofer who emphasizes flat roof work ranks higher.

The Practical Timeline

Week 1 to 2: Set up or verify your Google Business Profile. Make sure proximity is optimized (service area is correct) and relevance is decent (profile mentions your main services).

Week 3 to 8: Ask every customer for a review. You should have 5 to 15 reviews by now. Prominence is starting to build.

Week 9 to 12: You’ll rank for “roofer near me” in your area. You’ll get calls from Google. Some of these people will hire you. Ask them for reviews too.

Month 4 onwards: As your review count builds and you stay active on your profile, you’ll climb the rankings. By month six, you should be in the top three for “roofer near me” in your main service areas.

The timeline varies depending on how much local competition you have. In a small town, you might rank in three months. In Dublin with hundreds of roofers competing, it might take six months. But it always works if you stick with it.

What To Do Right Now

Today, verify your Google Business Profile is set up correctly. Check your service area, your phone number, your hours, and your main services. If anything is wrong, fix it.

Tomorrow, ask every customer you’ve worked with in the past six months for a Google review. Send them the link. Expect 30 to 50% response rate.

Next week, after you complete your next job, ask the customer for a review before they leave the site or immediately after.

Make it a routine. Every Friday, update your Google Business Profile with a new photo. Every time you finish a job, ask for a review.

Proximity is automatic. Relevance is set up once. Prominence builds over time. In six months of consistent effort, you’ll be ranking for “roofer near me” in your area and you’ll have more leads than you can handle.
