A local citation is when your business appears on another website with your name, address, and phone number. Each citation is a trust signal to Google. More citations mean higher ranking, especially in local search.

Most Irish tradespeople focus only on their Google Business Profile. This is a mistake. You need citations from multiple trusted sources. This post tells you exactly where to get them.

What Local Citations Are and Why They Matter

When your business name, address, and phone number appear on another website, that is a citation. It does not matter if the site links back to you or if anyone actually clicks it. Google counts it as a trust signal.

Google treats citations like references. If your business is mentioned accurately on 30 different reputable websites, Google sees this as proof that you are a real, established business in your area.

Citations are especially powerful for local search. When someone searches for “plumber in Cork,” Google ranks businesses partly by how many quality citations they have from Irish business directories.

The more consistent and numerous your citations, the stronger your local SEO foundation.

The Most Important Directories for Irish Tradespeople

Google Business Profile is number one. Everything else flows from here. Get this right before you worry about anywhere else.

Golden Pages. This is Ireland’s main business directory. Getting listed here is critical. Golden Pages has high authority with Google. A citation from Golden Pages is worth more than many smaller sites.

Yelp Ireland. Yelp is trusted by Google. Claims your Yelp listing and fill it completely.

Facebook Business Page. Set this up even if you do not use Facebook much. Make sure the name, address, and phone match your official format exactly.

Checkatrade equivalent. In Ireland, trade-specific directories are important. Checkatrade is UK-focused, but similar sites exist. Look for Irish trade-specific review or directory sites in your industry.

Local Chamber of Commerce. Most Irish towns have a Chamber of Commerce that lists local businesses. These are trusted by Google.

Trade association directories. If you’re an electrician, look for RECI (Register of Electrical Contractors of Ireland). If you do heating or insulation work, the SEAI register. If you’re a builder, CIF (Construction Industry Federation) has listings. These carry weight with Google.

Local county council pages. Many county councils maintain business directories. Being listed increases your local authority.

Trustpilot. A review site, yes, but it is also a citation source.

Thesaurus directory and similar. Various other Irish business directories exist. Focus on the main ones first, then add from here.

How to Get Listed

Most of these directories are free. Some require manual submission, some claim you have to claim a listing if it already exists.

For Golden Pages: Go to goldenpages.ie. Search for your business. If you exist, claim the listing and make sure all details are correct. If you do not exist, you can submit your information to be added.

For Yelp: Visit yelp.ie. Search for your business. Claim it if it exists or add it if it does not. Fill in all information.

For your local Chamber: Search for your area’s Chamber of Commerce and fill out their business registration form. Some are online, some require a phone call.

For trade associations: If you’re eligible (RECI for electricians, for example), register directly with the association. This takes longer but is worth doing.

For smaller directories: Search “Irish business directory [your trade].” Add your business to the ones that appear.

How Many Citations Do You Actually Need?

A strong foundation for most Irish towns is 20 to 30 quality citations. If you’re in a small town, 15-20 is solid. If you’re in Dublin or Cork, 30-40 is reasonable.

You do not need hundreds. Quality matters more than quantity. Twenty citations from reputable Irish directories are worth more than 100 citations from spam sites nobody has heard of.

What to Avoid

Spam directories. Do not pay for listings on random sites with no traffic. Some “directory” sites exist only to sell listings to businesses. Google knows these are low quality.

Paying for listings unnecessarily. Most of the directories that matter are free. If a site asks you for money immediately, question whether it is worth listing on.

Inconsistent information across directories. When you submit to each directory, make sure your NAP matches exactly across all of them. This is more important than the number of citations.

Ignoring your primary listing. Golden Pages is not sexier than a specialized trade directory, but it has more weight with Google. Prioritize it.

The Priority Order

First: Set up and optimize your Google Business Profile completely.

Second: Get listed on the top 10 directories. This is your foundation. Golden Pages, Yelp, Facebook, local Chamber, your trade association if applicable, and 5 others from the list above.

Third: Add more listings as you find them. Do not stress about having exactly 30. Having 15 good ones beats having 50 bad ones.

Fourth: Keep your information updated everywhere. When you change your phone number or move, update all listings. This takes an hour but it is worth it.

The Real Impact

A business with proper citations across the top Irish directories will rank higher than an identical business with only a Google Business Profile. This is measurable and consistent.

Most of your competitors are not doing this. They have 1-2 listings. You can be in 20-30 trusted places with a few hours of work.

Citations are free. They take time but no money. They compound over time as Google learns to trust your information across multiple sources.
