A lot of tradespeople in Ireland built their business entirely on word of mouth. A good reputation, a few loyal customers, referrals doing the rest. And for a long time, that was enough.
But something shifted. And it happened gradually enough that a lot of tradespeople did not notice until the phone got a bit quieter.
What Changed
The way people find tradespeople has changed fundamentally in the last ten years. When a neighbour recommends you, the first thing most people do now is look you up. They want to see your work. They want to see reviews from people they do not know. They want to check you are legitimate before they let you into their home.
If they search for you and find nothing, doubt creeps in. If they find a competitor with a professional website and 30 five-star reviews, the decision is often made before they ever call you.
Word of mouth did not disappear. It just moved online.
What You Are Losing Without a Website
Let’s be specific about what not having a website actually costs you.
Every customer your competitor gets from Google. When someone searches “painter Dundalk” or “roofer near me” and you do not have a website, you simply do not exist for that person. They hire someone who does.
The ability to capture warm leads at 11pm. Customers do not only decide they need a tradesperson during business hours. They think of it when they notice the leak, see the crack, or finally get round to sorting the garden. If there is nowhere for them to leave an enquiry at that moment, you lose them to whoever they find when they search.
Credibility with new customers. A personal recommendation gets you in the door. Your website is what closes the deal. A professional-looking site with photos of your work, real reviews, and clear information tells a new customer you are the real thing.
The compounding benefit of SEO. A website that ranks on Google works for you every day without any ongoing effort or ad spend. The longer it has been live and well maintained, the more enquiries it generates. Every month without one is a month of that compounding benefit you will never get back.
But What If I Am Already Busy?
This is the most common objection. “I have more work than I can handle. Why do I need a website?”
A few honest answers:
First, the nature of work changes. Referral-heavy businesses are more vulnerable to slowdowns than people realise. If a few key referrers move away, retire, or stop recommending you, the pipeline can dry up surprisingly fast.
Second, you get to choose better jobs. When you have a steady flow of inbound enquiries from Google, you can afford to be selective. You take the jobs you want and pass on the ones you do not.
Third, your prices can go up. Customers who find you through Google and see a professional website with strong reviews are less price-sensitive than those coming through word of mouth. They have already decided you are legitimate before they contact you.
Fourth, it will only get more competitive. Every year, more tradespeople in your area are investing in websites and SEO. Getting started now is significantly easier than playing catch-up in two or three years.
The Short Answer
Yes, you need a website in 2025. Not because it is expected, but because it is the single best long-term investment you can make in your business. It works while you are on the tools. It works while you are asleep. And unlike every other form of advertising, the results compound over time.
The question is not whether to have one. It is whether you want a good one that generates work or a basic one that just sits there.
